Closed Loop recycles and supports local charities at Canberra Floriade

Floriade 2024

Sustainability company Closed Loop transformed waste management into a remarkable success story again this year at Canberra Floriade. During the month-long event which ran from 14 September to 13 October, their team implemented container recycling on site which saw an incredible 44,979 bottles and cans diverted from waste and raising $4,497.90 for Roundabout Canberra and the Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) from the ACT Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) container refunds.

National Operation Manager at Closed Loop, Bridget Davis, said container recycling ran smoothly, with purple ACT CDS bins clearly labelled and positioned in visible locations for attendees to use.

“Closed Loop also hand-sorts additional bottles and cans from the co-mingled recycling bins, and other waste streams where they have been incorrectly disposed of,” Bridget added.

As well as container recycling, the company separates other waste into different resource streams to maximise recycling of materials and minimise landfill. Bridget said that Closed Loop often diverts more than 80 percent of waste at events, ensuring the materials are reused.

Roundabout Canberra and IMF received nearly $2,250 each from the Floriade container returns to support their work in the community. IMF is a health promotion charity that uses running and physical activity to improve and promote the well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Roundabout Canberra supports families in need by providing essential items for babies and children.

“The ACT Container Deposit Scheme continues to be a huge success at events in ACT. Because of this, a considerable donation was raised for local charities, and event patrons can be confident that their event waste is ending up in the best possible place to be recycled,” said Bridget.

Closed Loop operates across Australia and New Zealand, managing waste at many major events. By utilising initiatives like ACT CDS, the company saves waste from landfill through recycling, composting, donating or reusing.
